Teachers, Alexandra Asis and Caitlin Finn, discuss their classrooms and Autism Awareness at Highgate Heights Elementary.
Highgate Heights has the privilege of having four special classes of students with autism. We have students in second, third, fourth grade and a multi-grade New York State Alternate Assessment class. We incorporate a social skills curriculum while teaching the state standards. All of the teachers spend time differentiating lessons to meet the varying needs of our students. All students come with diverse needs that are addressed through engaging, hands-on lessons to meet multiple sensory learning styles.
As a team, we have decided to hold a "Wear BLUE jeans for Autism Awareness" fundraiser. Faculty, staff, and students have the opportunity to wear blue jeans and donate one dollar toward a worthwhile cause. April 2nd is World Autism Day. The world "lights it up blue!" to show awareness for individuals with autism. Autism now effects 1 in 68 children. It is the fastest growing developmental disorder at the present time. We chose to donate all proceeds to the national organization of Autism Speaks. Autism Speaks continues to research autism and provide support to individuals and families of children with autism.
As a school, we wish to raise awareness and acceptance not only for our students, but toward all individuals with autism. Please consider making a donation toward our cause. You can contact Jaime Dombrowski if you would like to contribute to this worthwhile cause. We all thank you in advance!
