Buffalo Promise Neighborhood has the pleasure of introducing Lamar Thomas, a former Highgate Heights student. Lamar received his Promise Scholarship in 2018, and recently completed his freshman year at Canisius High School.
Lamar is both a scholar and an athlete, maintaining good grades in all of his classes while playing intramural sports five days a week. As a talented mathematician, he especially enjoys Algebra and solving complex equations. Lamar believes that Highgate has prepared him for the challenges and rigorous coursework at Canisius by teaching him how to take his education seriously from a young age.
It can be hard for many students to adjust to high school in a new environment, but Lamar has found his perfect fit at Canisius. “I really like the environment at Canisius. I enjoy having more freedom and I’ve met a lot of cool people!” said Lamar. Moreover, Lamar expressed how much the positive relationships with his teachers have meant to him.
Lamar’s mom has played a pivotal role in his success, from ensuring that he studies and completes his homework, to driving him to his many practices and games. Providing the best education for her son is paramount, and the road to get there was a family achievement. “I love the BPN Scholarship! We always wanted him to go to Canisius and I was stressed about the financials of paying for private school. But I was going to make it happen by any means necessary; I picked up a second job. I cried when I got the letter informing us that he had received the scholarship.”
BPN is extremely proud of Lamar and all of his accomplishments. We look forward to his bright future and milestones he will continue to achieve.
